The Minister of Tourism works for the sustainable development of the tourism industry. Examples of initiatives taken by the Minister toward this end include the development of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010 and the establishment of the Tourism Research Council New Zealand.

The Tourism Research Council New Zealand (TRCNZ) was established by the Minister of Tourism in 2000 to ensure the provision of quality information, research and forecasts to meet the needs of a wide range of tourism sector users. TRCNZ's purpose is to: "define, champion and pursue an integrated research strategy to ensure the co-ordinated provision of consistent, authoritative and reliable research, information and forecasting."

Key priorities of the TRCNZ are to:

Articulate a research and development strategy for tourism.
